On June 16, 2026, a large‑scale interdisciplinary international conference was held at the N. N. Burdenko VSMU, organised by leading experts in the fields of ophthalmology and infectious diseases. The event was attended by representatives from: the N. N. Burdenko Voronezh State Medical University (Russia); Harbin Medical University (China); Tashkent State Medical University (Republic of Uzbekistan).

Generalised infections are one of the most challenging issues in modern healthcare. These diseases do not recognise disciplinary boundaries, require in‑depth knowledge across various fields of medicine, and call for a holistic understanding of how the body’s systems interact.

Professor Maria Alexandrovna Kovalevskaya served as the moderator of the conference and head of the programme committee.

The conference demonstrated that the synergy of knowledge — the precision of ophthalmology and a systemic approach to treating infectious diseases — opens up new opportunities for medical science.

On June 11, 2026, a joint scientific and practical conference of young and leading researchers from N.N. Burdenko Voronezh State Medical University, the Research Institute of Experimental Biology and Medicine, and Harbin Medical University (China) took place.

The event was dedicated to pressing issues in cardiology and pharmacology, including the study of the role of micro‑RNA in the diagnosis and monitoring of chronic non‑communicable diseases.

Academician Yang Baofeng, Co‑Chairman of the Association of Sino-Russian Medical Universities (ASRMU), delivered the welcome speech to the participants. He emphasised the high relevance of the scientific topics under discussion, noted the importance of transferring innovative technologies into clinical practice, and stressed the need to develop and implement new technologies for the diseases prevention and treatment.

Professor Yanan Jiang and young researchers from the National Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Diseases in Cold Regions presented fundamental and applied reports. Researchers from N. N. Burdenko Voronezh State Medical University presented the results of studies aimed at investigating the role of micro‑RNAs in the development and progression of cardiovascular pathologies.

Round Table “Internationalisation of Medical Education: Barriers, Opportunities, and Development Prospects” was held in Moscow

As part of the Federal Forum of International Medical Students Medunity Russia, which took place from June 1 to June 3, 2026, at the Congress Centre of the Scientific and Technological Park of Biomedicine of the First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University), a round table was held for the heads of delegations from universities invited to participate.

The round table programme focused on current issues of internationalising medical education. Participants discussed barriers and opportunities for the adaptation of international students, pedagogical solutions for developing clinical thinking, professional trajectories for graduates, and the prospects for establishing alumni communities in Russian medical universities.

On behalf of Voronezh State Medical University (VSMU) named after N.N. Burdenko, the report was presented by Elena Sergeevna Baeva, Deputy Director of the International Institute of Medical Education and Cooperation for Educational Programmes, Associate Professor. She spoke about the phenomenon of modern student life among international citizens and the experience of our university in organising the educational process for them.

The presented report sparked great interest and discussion, as it addressed pressing issues of interaction and the mentality of international students, their internalisation and readiness to fulfil their professional duty. The proposed cooperation initiatives and topics for future discussion were accepted by the organising committee, which expressed gratitude for the preparation of the fundamental report and invited the speaker to participate next year.

The round table not only brought together like‑minded professionals working in the field of medical education with international students, but also people ready to develop this area, introducing new perspectives and considering long‑term cooperation prospects.

Following the meeting, a decision was made to submit a resolution aimed at establishing an Association of Graduates of Medical Universities among International Citizens. This association would act as a bridge between our countries, participate in discussing and finding solutions to emerging issues, maintain cooperation, and organise joint conferences and forums for exchanging opinions and consolidating results.

According to R.E. Emirveliev, this organisation should have a more global scope and not be limited to the Sechenov University base alone. It should operate as a fully‑fledged digital service, covering a wide range of opportunities and addressing issues faced not only by current but also by future graduates — such as learning the Russian language, increasing the number of hours dedicated to its acquisition, discussing instruction in a lingua franca, and standardising Russian language exams.

All round table participants supported this initiative, as no such oversight body currently exists.

The Federal Forum of International Medical Students «Medunity Russia» was held at Sechenov University, Moscow

The grand opening of the Federal Forum of International Medical Students Medunity Russia took place from June 1 to June 3 at the Congress Centre of the Scientific and Technological Park of Biomedicine at the First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University). Over the course of three days, the business, scientific, and educational programme brought together around 300 students from 33 countries who had come to study in Russia, all gathered at university venues.

Sechenov University and the Association “Council of Rectors of Medical and Pharmaceutical Higher Education Institutions” organised Medunity Russia at the initiative of the international students themselves.

Peter Glybochko, Rector of Sechenov University and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, welcomed the forum participants: “The mission of Sechenov University and the entire community of rectors of Russian medical and pharmaceutical universities is to ensure that international students studying in our country can realise their full potential — both in their studies and in extracurricular activities, ranging from sports to youth activism, and in research, where they can become part of scientific teams engaged in cutting‑edge developments in Russia and around the world.”

“In this hall, I see, without exaggeration, the future of global medicine,” Alexey Solobuyev, Deputy Director of the Department for Monitoring, Analysis, and Strategic Development of Healthcare at the Russian Ministry of Health, addressed the forum participants. “Today, our universities continue a longstanding tradition: training specialists not only for our own country but for global healthcare as well. After receiving a diploma from one of our national universities, you will become bearers of high professional standards and a medical culture rooted in respect for patients. Wherever you work — in Russia or in your home country — preserve the values instilled in you by the Russian education system.”

Russian was chosen as the official language of the forum, and this was no coincidence. Learning the language and culture of the country where you study — and with which you may one day link your professional path — is an important part of the experience for international students in Russia.

“For professional development, it is crucial to unite in communities, exchange experiences, and support one another,” Pavel Shevtsov, Deputy Head of the Russian Agency for International Cooperation), congratulated the students on the opening of the forum. “You are now ambassadors of Russia in your home countries. For the Agency, which has opened 85 centres in 72 countries, your experience and energy are especially valuable. Share generously the information about the level of education and the hospitality of Russia with young people who are just choosing where to go to study.”

L. Skakovskaya, Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education, and Culture, also sent greetings to the participants of Medunity Russia: “I am confident that the knowledge you gain in Russia will serve as a solid foundation for your future development.”

The first day of the forum was marked by the Medical Exploration Bridge International Young Scientists Competition, where three students from the Voronezh State Medical University (VSMU) N.N. Burdenko’s International Education and Cooperation programme successfully presented their reports:

The work on interhemispheric asymmetry of the brain in representatives of different ethnic groups, presented by first‑year student Vsevolod Baka from the International Institute of Medical Education and Cooperation (IIMEC), was awarded an honourable second place!

Throughout the three days of the forum, students from various countries had the opportunity to take part in the colourful festival Creativity Without Borders, attend educational masterclasses on biomedtech entrepreneurship, Russian language, and emergency care, as well as enjoy sports games and excursions — for example, getting acquainted with the cutting‑edge research of Sechenov University scientists at the Scientific and Technological Park of Biomedicine.

On the third day of the forum, the participants visited the digital cluster School 21. Sechenov, where they took part in a masterclass on prompt engineering and creating web pages and games to develop cross‑professional competencies.

The International Scientific and Educational‑Methodological Conference «Neurophysiological Research Methods: Applied Aspects» was held on May 21–22, 2026, in a hybrid format.

It included two plenary sessions, two scientific sections, a meeting of the heads of departments of normal physiology, and a competition of research projects for young scientists.

The Conference was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences N. N. Burdenko. At the beginning of the Conference Cooperation agreement was signed between the West Kazakhstan Medical University named after M. Ospanov (Aktobe, Kazakhstan) and the Voronezh State Medical University named after N. N. Burdenko.

The event was aimed at discussing the best scientific and applied developments on current issues in neurophysiological methods of human research.

Fifth- and sixth-year students of the Faculty of Pediatrics, Elena Smikova and Polina Zholudeva, demonstrated a high level of scientific training at the 80th International Scientific and Practical Conference of Students and Young Scientists «Actual Problems of Modern Medicine and Pharmacy – 2026».

The event was held at the Belarusian State Medical University in Minsk at the end of April this year.

On April 23, 2026, the traditional English-language forum "Medicine of the 21st Century - Medicine Without Borders" was held at the N.N. Burdenko Voronezh State Medical University as part of the XXII International Scientific Burdenko Congress dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding scientist and surgeon Nikolai Nilovich Burdenko.

This event, which has become a good tradition, attracted a significant number of participants this year. Over 50 scientific presentations were presented in three sections: «Clinical Sciences» and «Basic Sciences». All the participants' presentations were made in English, which emphasized the international nature of the meeting.

The following students presented their work online: from Harbin Medical University (China), Semey Medical University (Republic of Kazakhstan), Belarusian State Medical University (Republic of Belarus), Ogarev Mordovia State University, Sechenov University, and Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky.

Debate on Aging

The  conference  "Hot Health Topics: English Discussion Club" was held in English, organized by the Foreign Languages Department, took place at Voronezh N. N. Burdenko  State Medical University , April 13, 2026,  The event was conducted in the format of academic debates and was aimed at developing professional communication and critical thinking skills among students.

The topic of the debate "Medical Intervention in Natural Aging: Cheating Death or a Physician's Duty?" was a relevant issue for contemporary bioethics and gerontology.

Two student teams from the university took part in the debate.

Team coach: Victoria A. Girko, Lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages.

The debate moderators were Anna O. Stebletsova — Doctor of Philology, Professor, Head of the Foreign Languages Department and Natalia V. Malashenkova — Lecturer at the Foreign Languages Department/

The debate  had three rounds

1.Monologue Presentations.
Participants delivered key statements (time limit: 3 minutes).

2. Cross-Examination.
The teams asked each other questions based on the content of the monologues (time limit: 2 minutes).

3. Jury Questions.
Participants answered questions from the expert panel (time limit: 2 minutes).

To enhance audience engagement and transparency of assessment, online voting was used. Prior to the start of the debates, the audience expressed their initial opinion on the topic through a digital poll. After each round, the voting results for the most convincing speaker were broadcast in real time.

The participants' presentations were evaluated by the expert jury consisting of Yanina S.Shkatova — Specialist at the Center for Scientific Research, Development and Transfer of Medical Technologies and Elena E. Sukhareva — Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor at the Foreign Languages Department. The experts assessed the  language proficiency, argumentation,  evidence-based medicine sources, and rhetorical skills.

According to the audience vote and  the jury assessment, Team "For" ("For Medical Intervention") became the winners. The jury highlighted excellent performance of both teams, giving credit to Team "Against"for  being persvuasive and good at professional terminology.

The organizers emphasized that the conference "Hot Health Topics: English Discussion Club" is an important part of the university's research and educational environment. The project will continue into the new academic year.

On April 9-10, 2026, the 63rd International Scientific and Practical Conference «Days of Science of Kyrgyz State Medical Academy – 2026», dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the birth of Fatima Nurgazievna Nurgazieva, was held at the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy named after I.K. Akhunbaev in Bishkek, the Republic of Kyrgyzstan.

Alexander Konstantinovich Nagovitsin and Yulia Yurievna Bakutina, Assistants at the Department of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics at the N.N. Burdenko Voronezh State Medical University, attended the conference.

Within the framework of the section “Actual issues of internal medicine” their report “Diagnostic and clinical role of biomarkers GDF-15 and FGF23 in chronic heart failure” was presented. It was highly appreciated by the jury and was awarded the First-degree diploma.

MediLingua :  the creative competition results

On March 27, 2026, the results of the creative competition (Olympiad) "MediLingua: Medical Students Learn Foreign Languages" were announced.

The competition was organized by the International Institute of Medical Education and Cooperation and the Foreign Languages Department of Voronezh N.N. Burdenko State Medical University. It was held from January 20 to March 2, 2026. The Samarkand State Medical University acted as a co-organizer of the competition.

Over 100 works were submitted to the competition in the categories of "Video Projects," "Presentations," and "Posters." Participants from Voronezh State Medical University named after N.N. Burdenko (Voronezh), Yaroslavl State Medical University (Yaroslavl), Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky, Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University (Moscow), Privolzhsky Research Medical University (Nizhny Novgorod), Voronezh State University (Voronezh), Grodno State Medical University (Grodno, Belarus), and Samarkand State Medical University (Uzbekistan) demonstrated in their works the role that languages — English, German, Latin, and Russian as a foreign language — play in the life of a medical student.

The key event at the Oncology Department was the Russian-Chinese Oncogynecological Forum "Uniting Experience and Traditions", dedicated to the memory of Professor I.E. Esaulenko, Rector of the N.N. Burdenko Voronezh State Medical University, which took place on March 27, 2026.

Yang Baofeng, Co-Chairman of the Association of Sino-Russian Medical Universities, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor at Harbin Medical University, and Honorary Professor at N. N. Burdenko Voronezh State Medical University, sent a video  in which he praised Professor Igor Eduardovich Esaulenko's outstanding contributions to the development of Russian-Chinese youth scientific and educational cooperation.

Young researchers from Russia and China presented their scientific reports, which covers a wide range of topics, from fundamental mechanisms of carcinogenesis to advanced methods of radiation diagnostics and organ-preserving treatment.

The 5th International Scientific and Practical Conference “Physiological Foundations of Cellular Metabolism and Cellular Signaling” was held at Voronezh State Medical University (VSMU) named after N.N. Burdenko

On March 19, 2026, the Department of Normal Physiology, in collaboration with colleagues from Harbin Medical University (China) and Grodno State Medical University (Republic of Belarus), hosted a conference in memory of Professor I.E. Yesaulenko.

The event aimed to foster an interdisciplinary discourse on integrated knowledge of the foundations of cellular metabolism and cellular signaling. It focused on discussing the latest achievements in cellular signaling from both theoretical and empirical perspectives, as well as on exchanging experience in fundamental and applied aspects of modern physiology. Key topics included integrative physiology, mathematical modeling of intercellular and intracellular signaling, and related issues.

Guests of the conference included leading scientists from:

• Harbin Medical University;
• Grodno State Medical University;
• Tyumen State Medical University;
• Derzhavin Tambov State University.

A total of 16 presentations were delivered.

Medical Quiz‑2025: English‑Language Quiz Held at VSMU on December 12, 2025

On December 12, 2025, the Medical Quiz‑2025 in English was held at the Department of Normal Physiology of Voronezh State Medical University (VSMU) named after N.N. Burdenko.

First‑ to third‑year students from various faculties had the opportunity to present their projects and compete in both team and individual rounds.

The quiz consisted of three rounds:

• «Myth or Reality»;
• «Project»;
• «Russian Scientists in Physiology».

Project presentations involved team performances following a pre‑prepared plan, answering questions from the jury, and engaging in opposition (rebuttal) with rival teams.

Histology Without Borders: International Olympiad in English Successfully Debuted at VSMU

November 26, 2025, the Department of Histology of the Voronezh N.N. Burdenko State Medical University wrote a new page in its history: for the first time, the International Histology Olympiad in the English language was organized and successfully held. The event went far beyond the university, uniting future medical professionals from different countries.

The department's initiative had no geographical borders, which was proven by its participants. Students studying in the lingua franca from Osh State University (Kyrgyzstan), Samarkand Medical University (Uzbekistan), and VSMU named after N.N. Burdenko took part in the intellectual competition.

The flexible format of the event — in-person (for students of VSMU named after N.N. Burdenko) and online on the myquiz platform (for foreign participants) — ensured equal conditions for everyone and allowed the competition to be held at a high organizational level.

The Olympiad was structured in such a way as to test not only the fundamental knowledge of students. Participants demonstrated their skills in diagnosing histological microslides, and also showed clinical and creative thinking, answering associative questions.

Based on the results of the intense competition, the prize places were distributed as follows:

• 1st place: students of Osh State University and VSMU named after N.N. Burdenko.
• 2nd place: students from Samarkand Medical University, OshSU and VSMU named after N.N. Burdenko.
• 3rd place: students from Samarkand, Osh and Voronezh.

International Visit of the Voronezh State Medical University named after N.N. Burdenko (VSMU) delegation to the Republic of Uzbekistan

In October 2025, representatives from VSMU named after N.N. Burdenko visited the Bukhara State Medical Institute named after Abu Ali Ibn Sino and Samarkand State Medical University. Voronezh State Medical University named after N.N. Burdenko was represented by Timofey V. Chubarov, MD, Head of the Endocrinology Center, Associate Professor of the Department of Propaedeutics of Childhood Diseases and Polyclinic Pediatrics at the VSMU, Chief Physician of the Voronezh Children's Clinical Hospital, and Olga A. Zhdanova, MD, Professor of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology.

  

In Bukhara, representatives of the University took part in the XII Eurasian Congress of Pediatric Doctors "Child and Society: problems of health, development and nutrition", which included holding symposiums on the provision of specialized and high-tech care to children, topical issues of pediatrics and pediatric surgery. Professor O.A. Zhdanova and T.V. Chubarov, MD, moderated the symposium "Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Bioethics in the Mother and Child system" and presented reports on the results of the research work of the Voronezh Children's Clinical Hospital of the Voronezh State Medical University named after N.N. Burdenko.

The symposium on neonatal practice was held at the Bukhara branch of the Republican Center of Perinatology. The participants got acquainted with the work of the Republican Center, took part in the discussion of reports together with colleagues from Bukhara State Medical Institute, Kazakh National Medical University named after S.D. Asfendiyarov and "University Medical Center" Astana, Republic of Kazakhstan, Republican Perinatal Center, Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan.

Within the framework of the congress, a competition for young scientists was held, in which VSMU was represented by sixth-year students of the pediatric faculty, Alina Izmalkova and Polina Zholudeva. Following the results of the competition, Polina Zholudeva's report, prepared under the guidance of Prof. Batishcheva G.A., associate professor Khoroshikh N.V. and assistant Kaledina E.Ya. took 2nd place, the work of Alina Izmalkova in collaboration with 5th year students of the pediatric faculty Zybenko A.Yu., Smykova E.E., Belyanskaya A.D., performed under the guidance of Chubarov T.V. and Zhdanova O.A., took 3rd place.

During the visit, an excursion to the laboratory for the production of herbal medicines was organized, which was conducted by the rector of the Bukhara State Medical Institute, Professor Shukhrat Dzhumaevich Teshaev, as well as an inspection of the new academic building.

In Samarkand, the delegation got acquainted with the museum of the Samarkand State Medical University, conducted a tour of the new building and visited the unified center for working with documents.

During the visit, a meeting was held with Vice-rector for Research and Innovation, MD, Associate Professor Kubaev Aziz Saidolimovich, during which prospects for further cooperation were discussed.

An important aspect was the holding of working discussions with the heads of the Department of Pediatrics of the Faculty of Medicine, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Lilia Maratovna Garifulina and Head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, PhD Siddikov Olim Abdullayevich.

Clinical Case Reviews at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology: Learning from Real Cases!

Students of the International Institute of Medical Education and Cooperation participate in clinical reviews of patients as part of a student scientific group meeting.

The Department of Clinical Pharmacology has once again proven that the best way to learn is through hands-on experience. On October 22, 2025 another meeting of our student club was held, entirely dedicated to working with patients.

In the format of a clinical case review, students explored current issues of prescribing antithrombotic drugs, moving from theory to a real patient.

How did it go?

The students split into small groups and went to the departments of City Clinical Hospital No. 3 to perform patient work-ups and personally delve into the medical histories of patients receiving antithrombotic therapy. After that, each group presented their case for a joint professional discussion with our supervisor, Natalia Yuryevna Goncharova.

The analysis of a complex clinical case was prepared and brilliantly presented by MIMOS students Meretova Merjen from Turkmenistan and Hassine Nourennajaa from Tunis. The topic of their presentation — "Pulmonary Thromboembolism Associated with Dermatomyositis" — clearly demonstrated the complexity of medical decision-making. Their in-depth preparation and clear analysis formed the basis for a lively discussion on treatment choices, risk balance, and management of patients with comorbid conditions.

This meeting once again confirmed that the clinical case reviews regularly conducted by our department are an invaluable bridge between academic knowledge and future professional practice.
